That Stubborn Corner.

I prefer folk music
to almost any other kind--
music that can be made
right before your eyes
without any electricity.

It comes from
a corner of your heart
that is always ripped raw.

It's made with claps
and strings
and stomps
and howls.

A lot of times,
voices that sing
those kinds of songs
are really nothing special.

Because it's just a guy
singing about his feelings
or a few people singing together
like a family gathered
on a front porch.

A lot of the best folk voices
are gravelly and raw
like their hearts.

Lately, though,
all I want
is beautiful voices
singing beautiful songs.
Softly.

Songs like that
sooth that stubborn corner.
